New Hope for children with type 1 diabetes may lie in cord blood. Researchers found that cord blood infusions decrease the need for insulin. It is thought that stem cells in the blood prevent pancreas from destroying insulin producing cells. Researchers hope that infusing type 1 diabetic infants with their own umbilical cord blood will eventually become standard treatment.
