Vitamin A and Your Skin

Recent research suggests that Retin-A keeps the wrinkles away! While vitamin A is available in over the counter make-up and cosmetics, Retin-A is available by prescription only. Retin-A is just the prescription brand name for topical vitamin A. Studies show that you must continue to use Retin-A once you start using it or the wrinkles and sagging skin may re-appear. Vitamin A is a critical factor in keeping the skin young by promoting change in the character of the skin- getting rid of the fine wrinkles, dark circles and building up the collagen in the skin. The problem with over the counter vitamin A products is you really don’t have standardization and don’t actually know how much vitamin A you are getting in the products. Thus, the need for Retin-A, a standardized form of vitamin A. It is quite expensive -running about $120.00 per 8 oz. tube. The public health message indicated here is that wrinkled skin results from being in the sun without sun screen and smoking – two risk factors avoidable so that treatment may not be needed at the young age women are seeking it.
