Kaunitz on Women’s Health: A Safer Approach to Prescribing Menopausal Estrogen

The focus is on prevention of venous thromboembolism which occurs in about 2 per 1,000 menopausal women. Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) have shown that conjugated estrogen with methyoxy progesterone acetate increases risk of thromboembolism. Is there a safer way? Studies from France show that transdermal estrogen does not increase vasomotor symptoms.
