  • New Warning on Genentech’s Raptiva; What Is PML, Anyway?
  • “The FDA said today that patients taking the Genentech drug Raptiva are at risk of developing a potentially fatal condition known as PML, or progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.”
    This blog reviews the safety concerns associated with the use of the drug Raptiva and describes the disease entity “PML”. Raptiva is typically given to patients who have psoriasis and can affect the immune system of the patient taking this medication. Raptiva® (efalizumab) is a humanized therapeutic antibody designed to selectively and reversibly block the activation, reactivation and trafficking of T-cells that lead to the development of psoriasis. Approved by the FDA in 2003, several adverse reactions have been reported with its use leading to a “black box” warning issued on Raptiva in 2008.

  • “In a paper from January 2009, doctors out of Canada proposed a new theory about treating a suppressed HPA axis (which may be an issue for CFS patients), by suppressing it further.

    This is just a theory and hasn’t yet been used in humans or even animals. But is a new an interesting way that the HPA axis could be restored after being stuck in a hypocortisol state.”
