Low Magnesium Levels and C-Reactive Protein Levels
C-Reactive Protein is a protein associated with inflammation and heart failure. In a study designed to look at the association with magnesium deficiency and elevated high sensitivity C – reactive protein (hsCRP), a community –based cross-sectional study involving 488 healthy children aged 10-13 from Durango, Mexico were randomly selected to participate in testing this hypothesis.
The results pointed to a relationship between magnesium deficiency and hsCRP. A total of 87.1% had both elevated hsCRP and low magnesium levels. Children with this profile tended to have the highest fasting glucose, the lowest HDL, highest insulin levels and highest triglyceride levels.
More study is needed, especially cross-cultural and in the U.S. Particular attention needs to be paid to the relationship between hypomagnesemia, hsCRP and blood levels of chemicals related to the development of heart disease, arthritis and diabetes.
Despite the fact that many foods contain magnesium there is concern that the U.S. population do not get their daily recommended intake for this important mineral. Although the government has commented that despite low levels of magnesium, overt signs of magnesium deficiency rarely occur. However, recent evidence is pointing to the relationship between low levels of magnesium, immune dysfunction, cardiac disease and other illnesses.
Dietary magnesium may not be met by eating whole grains, leafy greens and legumes daily and a supplement may be needed. Laboratory tests can verify magnesium levels but must be ordered by a health professional. More evidence is needed before adequate public health recommendations can be made.
