Job Security is an Oxymoron
We have had several questions that relate to outsourcing and how it may affect job security within the Healthcare industry. The absolute best way to ensure that you have the highest level of job security is to develop a proactive strategy and make yourself indispensable to the organization.
Outsourcing
After reading “The World Is Flat” by Thomas Friedman, you may feel a bit nervous about this topic. His argument is that people, companies and countries must adapt to globalization in order to survive and that outsourcing is here to stay.
Take a second and think about how Healthcare is currently being outsourced:
- Healthcare organizations are able to engage a Teleradiology service which allows them to have films read by qualified Radiologists 24×7. The films could be read from anywhere in the world without the Healthcare Organization having to worry about adding additional staff.
- Entire Emergency Departments are being outsourced to companies who provide ED management services. These organizations provide everything from recruiting, billing and everything else in between. In theory, this type of service could be applied to almost any department within the organization.
Bullet Proof your Career
As a Healthcare Professional, your job is much safer in comparison to other fields. While there are no guarantees that your position will be there tomorrow, it is best that you develop a proactive strategy that improves your chances of survival.

- Keep your CV/Resume up to date
- Further your education
- Stay informed about the latest trends
- Expand your professional network
- Always keep an eye on new opportunities
Your job is certainly more secure if you make yourself indispensable. You are less likely to lose your job if you become the Authority on a certain topic (i.e. balloon pump management, EEOC compliance). You immediately become indispensable by writing articles, speaking about the topic, educating your colleagues and becoming an expert on the subject matter. This reliance upon your expertise will open up new doors and provide opportunities that were not available before.
Healthcare professionals by nature are very intuitive, intelligent and are able to adapt to change. By implementing proactive measures, regardless of your level of indispensability, you will be developing a strategy that will advance your career.
