“Amedica”
Last Tuesday, I flew into Dallas for a business trip. After I departed the plane, I had the privilege to meet Dawit Haille. Dawit is a taxi cab driver who speaks English well and told me that he has been in “Amedica” for 4 years.
Dawit described the conditions of Ethiopia in great detail which were very frightening to say the least. He told me that his father was a former Governor and was shot to death for reasons that he did not speak of. His family (which consisted of his mother, 5 brothers and sisters) did various things but all did not have the opportunity to be or do more.
His goal was to become an X-Ray Technician in hopes of supporting his family and providing a better life for himself. Dawit had been saving for some time to go to school which has been no easy task. His “paycheck” consists of whatever is left after he leases the cab, pays for fuel and other associated expenses.
The compelling story with Dawit is that he is happy driving a taxi cab because it was an opportunity that would not have been afforded to him anywhere else. He works many hours with little or no pay and still maintains a smile on his face because “Amedica” has provided a springboard for something greater. I was overwhelmed by his enthusiasm and he reminded me of how lucky I am to be an American.
In America, we have more Colleges, Universities and Technical schools that provide the education necessary to do wonderful things. More and more people (regardless of age, ethnicity or place of birth) are choosing the healthcare field because of the number of opportunities available and higher level of job security.
I believe that through Dawit’s determination, great things will happen. If you are ever in need of a taxi in Dallas, give Dawit a call. His number is 469-826-0088. I am confident that, you too, will feel overwhelmed by his enthusiasm to live in “Amedica”.
